MARY OBERING
Mary Obering found inspiration for six of her most recent pieces, including PAIII PS1 through PAIII PS6, while traveling to the Piazza Armerina in Sicily. The artist became intrigued by a series of unusual geometric mosaic borders that stood out from more prevalent Roman Classical designs of the time. The artist interpreted this thesis into the geometric foundation and coloration of the paintings which suggest ambiguous origins. Obering also created further perspectival ambiguity through strategically contrasting the frontal view with painted sides.

Other bodies of work by Obering reflect her more familiar approach of minimalist construction. In the series KCB, BCK, CBK, the artist uses lush layers of egg tempera applied to gessoed panels, coupled with rectilinear fields of gold leaf.

Mary Obering received her Master’s degree of Fine Arts in 1971 from the University of Denver. Since her last exhibition at RULE Gallery, in 2004, Obering has exhibited at The Marfa Hotel, Marfa, TX, NINNI ESPOSITO arte contemoranea, Bari, Italy, White Creek Gallery, Salem, NY, (an exhibition curated by Elizabeth Murray) and Hunter College, New York, NY.
