Dirk De Bruycker is a Belgian-born artist who currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, but also works at a studio in Nicaragua. De Bruycker creates his paintings by laying down a linear structure on the blank canvas. These lines are made with asphalt, which then resists the layers of thinned paint and cobalt drier that will later be applied on top. These lines hold more representational structure than the final paintings which have an overall “poured” look and are essentially nonobjective. It is the complexity of these paintings; that is, the layers of medium and the contrasts of drawn lines and poured forms, along with De Bruycker’s brilliant color choices; that infuse the paintings with content and allow viewers to intuitively recognize and respond to the themes in De Bruycker’s work. The paintings in this exhibit were all created within the last year, and are strongly influenced by his experiences working in Nicaragua.
Since the early 1980’s, De Bruycker has exhibited in galleries worldwide. In 2005, De Bruycker was honored with a solo exhibition sponsored by Caermersklooster, the Provincial Center for Art and Culture for the Belgian province of East Flanders, located in the city of Gent. De Bruycker’s work is included in the Microsoft Collection in Seattle, WA, the Hallmark Collection in Kansas City, MO, the Bellagio Collection in Las Vegas, NV, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Sante Fe, NM.
