CARL ANDRE
Along with Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, and Robert Morris, Carl Andre helped forge the presence and direction of minimalism. He is widely recognized for his compositions of repeating uniform materials, ranging from stacks of wooden posts to sequences of square metal plates. His materials deny their universality in their individual attributes; metal plates reveal unique rust and scratches; wooden posts contain individual grain and splitting. His emphasis on materials takes a secondary role to his emphasis on place. In moving his compositions to the floor Andre forms a new relationship with the wall-familiar viewer. By occupying and altering space, his work forces interaction.
